St. John the Baptist Parish officials are looking to hire an operator for the Reserve-Edgard ferry. They could get permission tonight from the Parish Council's finance committee to seek proposals for the job.
Parish officials are trying to assume ferry operations after the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development deemed the Mississippi River crossing as too expensive. It dropped state funding for the ferry, and the service ended July 31.
The finance committee meets at 5:45 p.m. in the Parish Council chamber at the Percy Hebert Building, 1801 W. Airline Highway, LaPlace. It plans to discuss authorization to advertise for proposals.
The full council meets at 6:30 p.m. Parish President Natalie Robottom is scheduled to introduce a resolution to seek state grant money to help pay for ferry operations.
