A Silicon Valley company that provides satellite telephone and data services is relocating its headquarters to the Covington area, Gov. Bobby Jindal announced this afternoon.

Jindal said Globalstar is committed to relocating or creating more than 150 jobs in the area by the end of 2011, another 50 by the end of 2013 and another 300 by the end of 2019. The jobs will average an annual salary of $70,000 a year, Jindal said during a news conference at Globalstar's new headquarters near Interstate 12 and U.S. 190.

The company, previously headquartered in Milpitas, Calif., is launching new satellites beginning this fall and launching more next year with the hope of reestablishing its network that had deteriorated in 2007.

Globalstar acquired the Covington-area based company Axom in 2009. Axom had provided Globalstar with GPS tracking, messaging and other data-transmission products.
