BATON ROUGE -- The man Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon recommended to take the helm of the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp., has withdrawn his name from consideration and has decided to stay in Alabama, aides to Donelon said today.
Charles Angell, chief actuary and acting deputy commissioner of the Alabama insurance department, informed Donelon that he will not be taking the top job at Citizens, Lori Cherry, chief spokesperson for the Department of Insurance, said.
Angell cited personal reasons for rejecting the job. "It is more of a family thing," he said.
Donelon last week said that he had settled on Angell as his choice to replace John Wortman, who has been president of Citizens since April 2007. Wortman said he wants to retire and spend more time with his family.
Donelon was attending an insurance commissioners conference in West Virginia and could not be reached for comment.
Cherry said she is not sure if the department will re-open the application process now or take another look at the other four finalists for the job. Two of those are now top-level managers at Citizens.
A total of 16 individuals applied for the job and Donelon whittled it down to five.
Cherry said that Angell informed Donelon of his decision over the weekend.
