The Army Corps of Engineers on Monday announced it has awarded a $10.7 million contract to Veterans Construction Group JV of Metairie to build an intake basin for the Harahan "pump to the river" drainage project. It is the latest contract awarded in the 17-year-old Southeastern Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, or SELA, a series of more than 80 drainage jobs in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes.
Fifty-nine of the SELA jobs are in Jefferson Parish. Of those, 45 are complete, according to the corps.
The Harahan project is designed to drain that city and part of Elmwood to the Mississippi River, instead of to Lake Pontchartrain. The multi-contract project carries an overall pricetage of $150 million.
Veterans Construction is charged with building the intake basin at the confluence of of Mazoue Ditch, Harahan Ditch and the Soniat Canal. The work will last into 2017.
