Will be discussed at City Hall tonight at 6 p.m.
City Hall is hosting a meeting at 6 p.m. tonight on the future of the U.S. Postal Service's processing and distribution center on Loyola Avenue in downtown New Orleans, which employs 880 people. The postal service is looking into closing or consolidating 250 of its 487 processing plants.
Postal officials have said the New Orleans facility could be merged with a similar but larger facility in Baton Rouge. A distribution center in Lafayette also is on the roster of possible closures.
The average salary for employees who work in the distribution centers is $72,099, postal officials said. Local business leaders and public officials are lobbying hard to keep the facility open.
At tonight's meeting, members of the public will be allowed to ask questions and offer feedback, according to a news release from Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration. The meeting will be held in City Council chambers.
