The future of the U.S. Postal Service distribution center in New Orleans will be the subject of a meeting at City Hall tonight.

Postal officials have said the New Orleans facility could be merged with a similar but larger facility in Baton Rouge. A distribution center in Lafayette also is on the roster of possible closures.

The average salary for employees who work in the distribution centers is $72,099, postal officials said. Local business leaders and public officials are lobbying hard to keep the facility open.

At tonight's meeting, members of the public will be allowed to ask questions and offer feedback, according to a news release from Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration. The meeting will be held in City Council chambers.
