Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne announced last week that his office has paid grants totaling $1,236,636 to 17 parishes in the state as a part of a plan to split $30 million in BP payments with all 64 parishes for tourism promotion and marketing.
Two New Orleans area parishes, St. Tammany and Plaquemines, were approved for $250,000 each, the first installment of six quarterly payments that will see the two parishes ultimately receive $2.167 million each.
Dardenne spokesman Jacques Berry said the first parish to win approval for the use of BP money was Lafayette, which will get a one-time allocation of $235,150 to promote its Festival Acadiens et Créoles and other events.
The other 14 parishes to receive payments include Evangeline, Jackson, Acadia, Lincoln, St. Landry, Avoyelles, East Feliciana, Franklin, Madison, West Baton Rouge, Allen Grant, Vermilion and Rapides.
The smallest amount to be paid out in the program is $2,448 to Tensas Parish, while the state Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is penciled in for $6.5 million in BP marketing money and Orleans Parish is set to receive $6 million.
The sharing of the BP money -- including sending a piece of it to all parishes, even those not directly affected -- was authorized by Dardenne's predecessor, interim Lt. Gov. Scott Angelle, three days before leaving office.
