Gov. Bobby Jindal has appointed Robert Heitmeier of Metairie to be chairman of the Board of Examiners of the New Orleans/Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots for the Mississippi River.
By law, the three-member board must report to the governor "all cases of neglect of duty, habitual drunkenness and gross violations of its rules" and, upon referral by the governor, investigate cases and report findings with possible recommendations for penalties.
Heitmeier, brother of state Sen. David Heitmeier and former state Sen. Francis Heitmeier, has long been a player in river pilot politics.
He is one three river pilots whom Jindal appointed to the board. The others: Willie Brown Jr. of Harvey and Lee Jackson of Avondale.
