Legal woes targeted at the sites in Luling

St. Charles Parish awarded a $1.5 million contract to repair six sewer lift stations and force mains to Digco Utility Construction of Broussard.

The money comes from a low-interest loan from the state Department of Environmental Quality.

The parish had estimated the work would cost $1.8 million.

The lift stations are all in Luling, and have been cited for a number of environmental law violations because of overflows, parish officials said. Officials also feared the lift stations' design could expose maintenance workers to toxic gases.

In other action, the council appointed Ingrid Adams of St. Rose to the parish Library Board of Control.

Adams, who Council Chairman Dennis Nuss said is a published author and sought the position, also is on the board of the parish's emergency communications district.

Council members Paul Hogan and Carolyn Schexnaydre voted against the appointment, saying St. Rose would have two of the board's five members.

The Library Board supervises operations of the system's five branches, with a sixth under construction.

The council put off a vote on an ordinance to place speed tables and warning signs on Monsanto Avenue between Maria Street and U.S. 90 and between Maria Street and West Heather Drive.

Residents have complained about speeding motorists.
