Orleans Parish property owners appealing their 2014 property tax assessments began scheduled hearings this week. More than 1,200 appeals are expected, officials said.

The appeals are being heard at the Lindy C. Boggs International Conference Center at the University of New Orleans. The process is a function of the New Orleans City Council, acting in its capacity as the Orleans Parish Board of Review.

"We took the hearings out of City Hall to streamline the process and cut wait times," City Council Chief of Staff Evelyn Pugh said. She said the streamlined appeal system is designed to take a property owner about 20 minutes to complete.
