Orleans Parish property owners who are appealing their 2014 property tax assessments will be notified by mail beginning this week. They will receive letters from the New Orleans City Council, acting in its capacity as the Orleans Parish Board of Review.

Hearings on the assessment appeals will begin Sept. 13 at the Lindy C. Boggs International Conference Center at the University of New Orleans, 2045 Lakeshore Drive. Each letter will include the property owner's hearing date and time and will offer contact information for those desiring additional information about the appeal process.

The City Council said property owners should keep in mind that the most expedient and effective method to handle a disputed property tax assessment is to negotiate a mutually acceptable resolution with the assessor. Should that prove impossible, state law provides a hearing process by which property owners can appeal their property tax assessments.

The appeal process will end by Oct. 20.

After issuing a request for proposals, the City Council selected the firm of HGI Catastrophe Services LLC to conduct the appeals hearings and make recommendations to the Board of Review.
