Opponents said that existing laws are already in place to address underage drinking and disorderly people

After nearly two hours of discussion, the Lafayette City-Parish Council has defeated a proposal to ban go-cups and other open alcoholic containers from downtown Lafayette and two other entertainment areas.

The Advertiser reports the defeat came in a 5-4 vote Tuesday.

Another ordinance, which would have banned cruising vehicles from those same areas, was pulled by city-parish officials from the council's agenda.

In asking the council to pass the open alcohol container ban, Police Chief Jim Craft said it would be another tool to help police control large crowds, especially on weekends.

Council members opposing the ordinance said that existing laws are already in place to address underage drinking and disorderly people.
