New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other city and community leaders gathered Wednesday in front of the public library at the corner of Read and Lake Forest boulevards for ceremonies marking the completion of the eastern New Orleans streetscape project.
A total of $3 million in infrastructure improvements have been made along sections of Read, Crowder and Lake Forest boulevards. Improvements include new sidewalks along Lake Forest with access to the New Orleans East Regional Library and Joe W. Brown Park, new seating and trash receptacles in the small park at the corner of Lake Forest and Wright Street, a new walking path on Lake Forest, installation of 140 additional streetlights and more than 350 new trees, and a dedicated bike lane on Read, Crowder and Lake Forest boulevards.
The project was funded with federal Disaster-Community Development Block Grant funds. The infrastructure improvements were designed by Phoenix Global Construction and constructed by Command Construction LLC.
A streetscape is a public improvement project that enhances a public area and is intended to trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods.
"These streetscape improvements will tie together additional city investments like the $30 million in improvements to nearly complete Joe W. Brown Memorial Park, the $130 million New Orleans East Hospital which is currently under construction, and the completed $7.6 million New Orleans East Regional Library and $5.8 NOPD Seventh District Police Station," Landrieu said.
