The Jefferson Parish Council went behind closed doors Thursday morning to meet with its advisers on the future of East Jefferson General Hospital and West Jefferson Medical Center. The council opened its special 11 a.m. meeting in public and, after a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and brief formalities, moved into executive session at the General Government Building in Gretna.
Officials say they expect the meeting to update the council on the work of Kaufman, Hall & Associates, a national health-care consulting firm that the council engaged last year. Leaders of East Jefferson General and West Jefferson Medical Center, along with Parish President John Young and Chief Operating Officer Chris Cox, also are participating.
Council Chairman Chris Roberts said he doesn't expect the council to vote on anything. Votes are forbidden by state law in executive session but could come afterward when the council returns to the public portion of its meeting.
The council contracted with Kaufman, Hall and an international law firm, McDermott, Will & Emery, for advice on the complex and evolving health-care landscape and for strategy and marketing of its two hospitals.
