WASHINGTON - Baton Rouge is getting some belated financial assistance from the federal government for sheltering and providing medical care for Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005.
Women's Hospital in Baton Rouge is the recipient of a $1.1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its efforts during Hurricane Katrina, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., announced Wednesday.
Also receiving grants from FEMA is the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, $3.7 million for emergency protective measures and fuel distribution during Hurricane Isaac last year and $1.2 million to St. John the Baptist School Board for temporary transportation of school children to alternative schools as a result of Hurricane Isaac.
"When disaster strikes, our local communities respond to address the safety and well-being of our citizens - these funds are critical in these efforts," Landrieu said.
