Fat City could gain a new theater for movies or live shows under interim zoning regulations that Jefferson Parish officials are considering. The draft rules are scheduled for a Parish Council vote Wednesday (Jan. 30), along with a one-year study to write permanent rules.
Whether a would-be theater owner is poised to build in Fat City is not known. (See update.) The council resolution says rules are needed because the Planning Department and Inspection and Code Enforcement Department have identified the need to improve and clarify the Fat City zoning overhaul that the council adopted in 2010. Councilwoman Cynthia Lee-Sheng, whose district includes Fat City, and Planning Director Terri Wilkinson did not immediately returns calls Monday afternoon.
The resolution says a theater of as many as 200 seats could be used to screen films or offer live performances. For movies, it would be limited to a single screen. "Adult" movies would be forbidden.
Adoption of the resolution would make for the latest stimulus in the continuing drive to convert Fat City from Metairie's rundown former entertainment district into what the area's strategic development plan calls "a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-used neighborhood in the commercial heart of Jefferson Parish."
