Kenner to receive $21 million sewerage loan

The Kenner City Council meets today at 5 p.m. to consider accepting a $21 million loan from the state Department of Environmental Quality for sewerage improvements. DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch is expected to attend.

For months now, city officials have been laying the groundwork for the loan, which would be the second for Kenner in recent years. DEQ gave Kenner a $22 million loan during the administration of Mayor Ed Muniz.

Also on the council agenda are measures to:

  • Create a Board of Standards and Appeals, for cases where the code enforcement director has rejected applications for building permits.
  • Have city attorney Keith Conley and Code Enforcement Director Tamithia Shaw review code enforcement cases pending in Mayor's Court, to determine whether they should be heard by the Board of Standards and Appeals.
  • Call public hearings to determine whether buildings at 1805 Lloyd Price Ave. and 3045 Tupelo St. should be condemned.
  • Appoint Malinda Hills-Holmes to be an assistant city attorney.
  • Appoint seven people to the Alcoholic Beverage Permit Review Committee. They nominees are Ashley Jacobson for council Division A, Scott Whittaker for Division B, Latoya Simmons for the 1st District, Juan Suarez for the 2nd District, Kristi McKinney for the 3rd District, Frank Compagno for the 4th District and Ed Lancaster for the 5th District.

The council is likely to introduce a measure to rezone the 15-acre site of the former Redwood Park apartment complex. It would not vote on the rezoning until later in the month.

The council meeting takes place at City Hall, 1801 Williams Blvd.
