Without an extension, the program will expire May 31
The U.S. House will vote Wednesday on a Senate bill to extend the National Flood Insurance Program through the end of July. Without an extension, the program will expire May 31, postponing real estate closings in communities where mortgage providers require flood insurance.
Sen. David Vitter, R-La., spoke Friday to Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Ill., the House GOP majority's designated leader on the flood insurance program. Shortly thereafter, the House put the extension legislation on Wednesday's House calendar. The Senate approved the 60-day extension Thursday.
After the vote, Biggert said she was pleased Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has agreed to schedule a Senate vote next month on a five-year extension with changes designed to reduce financial losses for the program.
