Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, the chairwoman and top Republican on the Senate Small Business Committee, introduced legislation last week that they say is designed to improve oversight, transparency and accountability at the Small Business Administration.
Among other things, the bill would require the SBA to create a plan to use economic development programs to create jobs, submit a report to Congress on how the agency is working with private and nonprofit partners and provide more revealing metrics to determine the outcomes of job-producing efforts.
"Investing resources in helping entrepreneurs get their business off the ground is a key way government can help small businesses thrive and create jobs," Landrieu said. "But we must also make certain that these resources are used efficiently and effectively and that we're getting a good return our investment."
