A crucial project for the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority

There is a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a publicly financed project that will bring a health clinic and new storefront and office space to the corner of Washington and South Broad streets. Developer Green Coast Enterprises announced the project, which will mix $8.7 million in public and private money to renovate four buildings.

It's a crucial project for the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority, and the state Office of Community Development, which has dedicated $1 million in state funds to back the work. NORA Executive Director Jeff Hebert called it a "transformative project."

The anchor of the project will be 3300 South Broad St., which will become South Broad Community Health, a clinic designed by the surrounding neighborhood organizations with help from Tulane University Medical School.

Also, 4035 Washington Ave. is set to become HUB New Orleans, an incubator for "social innovators," nonprofits that work on environmental and social issues. Other buildings are planned to feature a new location for Laurel Street Bakery and office space for Green Coast, Global Green, the Broadmoor Development Corp. and the Broadmoor Improvement Association.
