A new post office serving east Slidell is set to open by the end of May, four months after Hancock Bank decided not to renew the contract to run the station out of one of its Whitney Bank branches. The new contract postal unit will be located inside Notary at Your Service, at 2157 E. Gause Blvd., in the Slidell Square shopping center that also houses Pizza Depot and Reker's Florist, said Monica Minor, retail specialist with the U.S. Postal Service in New Orleans.
The post office will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, she said.
The unit inside the Whitney Bank, at 2250 E. Gause, closed Jan. 31 after the bank's new owner -- Hancock Bank -- decided not to keep the postal station as part of the bank's operation. The bank building had housed a post office since 2001.
Now that the Postal Service has found a new location to house the unit, it is working to set it up and train store employees to run it. The business will receive a negotiated percentage of sales from the site.
When the postal unit opened at Whitney -- formerly Parish National Bank -- in 2001, the Postal Service had put plans for constructing new post offices nationwide on the back burner because of severe operating losses.
Officials said at the time that it would be three to five years before it would be possible to build a new, full-service post office in the fast-growing eastern Slidell area, but that never materialized.
