Former St. James Parish President Dale Hymel Jr. and former State Rep. Roy Quezaire Jr. were hired as special projects officers for the Port of South Louisiana.
The two posts, which pay about $80,000 each, allow the officers to oversee for port projects and lobby for funding, as well as special legislation to help the port attract businesses. The two men's exact salaries weren't available Friday.
The port encompasses 54 river miles in St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes. Most of the traffic that passes through the port are bulk commodities such as grain or oil, that pass through chemical plants, refineries and grain elevators that line the river banks in the three parishes.
However, the port also plans to build a rail spur and floating dock adjacent to Dow Chemical in Taft. Also in the works are plans to build a new administration building to replace a former savings and loan building on Belle Terre Boulevard in LaPlace that house the port's administrative
offices.
"We have a lot of projects going on," Chaisson said this week.
Hymel, served as St. James President for a decade before stepping down last year. Quezaire, of Donaldsonville, represented the 58th House District for 16 years and left in 2008 because of term limits. He later worked with the state Department of Transportation.
